History of Non-alcoholic beverages

The concept of non-alcoholic beverages has roots that date back to antiquity. While the modern notion of non-alcoholic beverages may connote the sense of a newer innovation, nothing could be further from the truth.

One of the earliest forms of non-alcoholic beverages was known as “kvass” and was often brewed by ancient Slavs, who lived across much of eastern Europe. Kvass was a fermented grain beverage made from rye, oats or barley and flavored with a variety of fruits and spices, much in the same way that beer is brewed today. Kvass appears to have been popular throughout Europe for many centuries, although it was eventually overshadowed by the emergence of beers, ciders and other alcoholic drinks.

At around the same time, throughout Africa, regions such as Ethiopia had their own form of non-alcoholic drink – a type of tea known as t’ella which was brewed from roasted barley, honey, ginger and various other herbs and spices. These teas were particularly popular during religious celebrations, where alcohol was considered inappropriate.

Of course, non-alcoholic drinks didn't become truly popular and widely available until the 19th century. At this time, carbonated drinks began to be mass-produced, with popular brands such as Coca-Cola, 7 Up and Dr Pepper leading the way. Most of these drinks were originally highly caffeinated, but soon decaffeinated versions were introduced for those looking for a more temperate option.

Since then, non-alcoholic drinks have gone from strength to strength, and now come in a dizzying array of flavors and varieties. Whether it is a refreshing glass of iced tea, a sweet, fruity smoothie, or an energy-boosting sports drink, there’s a non-alcoholic beverage out there to suit everyone’s tastes.
